They say behind every great man is a great woman, and Bertha Benz was certainly the perfect complement to inventor Karl Benz. She boldly took his automobile out in public and proved that it could be a reliable mode of transportation.

Not only was she bold, she had brains to go with it. The primitive automobile she stole broke down several times on her journey. She had the wits and know-how to repair it using only her hatpin and garter.

Truly an astonishing achievement, especially in the male dominated culture of the late 1800's. While Elizabeth Bennet was swooning over Darcy, and picking wild flowers, Bertha Benz was ripping off pieces of her clothes to act as a field mechanic to the world's first car.
